The best and one of the effective ways to stop mice in the home is by exclusion or blocking out any openings through which they enter.

It is essential if you mouse-proof any areas where you store, process, and use food. Some people use copper mesh to block the entrance of mice, but does this technique work?

Copper mesh is an excellent way to exclude mice and other rodents from entering through tight spaces. It is done by stuffing the copper mesh into holes, openings, and other possible points of entry. The mesh will prevent rodents from crawling in and force them to go elsewhere to build a nest.

Make sure that if you look holes in the walls, check the electrical and plumbing entrances, vents, chimneys, gutters, and doors that can be accessed by rodents.

Mice are known to chew through things to get their way in, so before that small hole grows larger for a mouse to get through; make sure to seal this hole.

What Is A Copper Mesh?

Copper mesh is a tubular, laid flat 100% copper used for rodent exclusions and rodent proofing. Since it is made from copper, it can be rolled easily for easy storage and use.

They are easy to cut and shape so that you can fill the cracks where pipes enter the home along with the filling gaps around the foundation vents and other areas.

Can Rats Chew Through The Copper Mesh?

Coper mesh does not rust and more importantly, it cannot be chewed by rodents easily. However, it should be tightly packed in with the use of foam or sealant since rats will move it if given the chance.

How To Use Copper Mesh For Rodents?

If you close an opening around a pipe or wire while using only expanding foam, the mice will get through it.

But if you place a copper mesh in the hole first, and then use expanding foam, the foam will cover the mesh.

1. During the inspection, look for all the possible entry points. Copper mesh is the one used to stuff into the openings. Remember that mice can fit through ¼ opening (diameter of the little finger) while rats can fit through ½ opening (diameter of the thumb).
2. Using a cutting tool, snip off the amount of copper mesh you need for the opening.
3. Work on the voids you wish to fill. You don’t have to fill the void. Make sure it is enough to keep out the pests. For instance, you found a gap around a drain pipe under the sink, just cut enough of the copper mesh to wrap around the pipe twice. Push the mesh into the void for a perfect fit.

When to use:

Use copper mesh whenever you noticed any gaps or voids around a structure. This is a great option when the void is too big for caulk or requires a different sealant to handle and repairs might not be feasible.

Copper mesh is safe to use, but make sure to keep this out of reach of children and pets.

When cutting the mesh, do it in the trash can because copper fibers may drop and contaminate sensitive areas. As with any metal products, cutting the mesh may leave sharp edges that can be harmful.

So take precautions and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and safety goggles.

Though copper mesh is an excellent product to get rid of mice, it is not a good choice for severe and active rodent infestation.

This can be used as an additional control measure and should be followed by using traps, rodenticides, and proper sanitation.
